How to Overcome any Fear

Do you love to travel but the thought of flying gets you in a cold sweat? Do you go blank at the thought of public speaking but need to get to grips with it to progress in your career? Do you want to be in a relationship but you dread the possible rejection when you finally ask the hottie out? Whatever challenge you’re facing at the moment, I’ve got your back.

Standing in the way of anything we want, is fear. Most of the time we don’t even notice we’re fearful, we just think we’re stressed. And we push it out of awareness by scrolling through Instagram or eating another block of chocolate. Whether we’re aware of our fear or not, fear stops us from taking action. And without action, we end up living a life we didn’t choose, because we’re not actively creating the life we want.

The video below is a visualisation to help you overcome the fear that stands in the way of you meeting your goals. It works like this:

  • We get your body into a calm state. To take those flights so you can see Fiji, or to give the talk so you can land the job, is to take a risk. To be able to take any risk, we need to feel safe – we need to believe that we will come out of this on top. Safety is achieved by calming the body. Our bodies and minds are completely linked: calm body, calm mind. Stressed out body, yup, you got it. Once your body is calm, your mind can focus so you can take action towards your goal.

  • We set a goal. To be able to create anything new in your life, you need to be able to imagine it first. Focussing on the fear – “I need to get over my fear of public speaking” – isn’t going to do anything for you, except amplify the panic. Instead, we need to shift your focus to who you want to be – “I am an engaging and fun public speaker”. Remember, energy flows where your focus goes. Focus on the goal so that your energy will organise itself to support you to reach it. Sound like woo-woo science? It’s not. Look up The Zeigarnik effect.

You can practice this visualisation a few times before your upcoming challenge to support you through it. If you want to get really good at goal-setting and overcoming all sorts of fear, practice this daily. With regular practice, you won’t just understand these concepts; you’ll actually be able to apply them to your life consistently and quickly, so that you can create anything you dream of.

You’ve got this!

Emma Hogg, Founder of A Life I Choose

Hi! As it says above, I'm Emma. I’m a psychotherapist who lives, breathes and eats the science of joyfulness, wellness and achievement. All the work I do is fuelled by my deep wish to belong to a world where people actively choose their lives! A person without choice is an unhappy individual. A person who passionately and resiliently lives their purpose experiences joy and fulfilment daily. If you’re like me and you see that the more people are consciously engaging in life, the happier our world will be, then we need you to be a beacon of this message by living it! My blog is one of my ways of creating dialogue with you, so that together, we can have a greater impact on our world. x
